Mark FitzGerald

Dr. Mark FitzGerald serves as Co-Director for the Institute for Heart + Lung Health. Dr. FitzGerald trained in internal medicine at University College Dublin. Following two years working as an internist in Africa he trained in respiratory medicine and clinical epidemiology at McMaster University. Subsequently he has taken a leadership position nationally and internationally in research focusing on airways disease, tuberculosis and health outcomes.

 His research has involved extensive ongoing collaboration with the CDC Atlanta. He chairs the Science Committee, and sits on the Executive committee, of the Global Initiative in Asthma (GINA) which provides global evidence based asthma guidelines. In addition he has been a member or co chaired the Canadian Asthma Consensus Working group since 1989. This group developed the first national evidence based asthma guidelines. He was the founding chair of the Canadian Respiratory Clinical Research Consortium. He was the Director of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation at Vancouver General Hospital from 2001-2009. In this capacity he coordinated a multi disciplinary group of investigators interested in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence based medicine and health policy. In that capacity he initiated the UBC SPPH Systematic review course which has trained over 100 graduate students in the last 6 years. In recognition of his research expertise he has been awarded a VGH Scientist Award, a BC Lung/ CIHR Scientist Award and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Distinguished Scholar Award.
